Hypnosis has continued to gain acceptance within mainstream medicine as appropriate treatment and can be integrated safely with conventional medicine as an effective treatment for a variety of conditions in the older adult. It is an intervention that can be used for relaxation and pain control, especially when conventional pharmacological regimens have failed.
Some people believe hypnosis causes the brain to release natural substances that affect the way you perceive pain and other symptoms. Others believe hypnosis acts on the unconscious mind and allows you to control body reactions that you cannot normally control, such as blood pressure, heartbeat, and hunger.
Self Hypnosis is especially helpful in sleep disorders and pain management. There are many reasons why we may not get enough sleep at night. It may be that there is a medical problem either physical or mental, that is keeping you awake at night. You may also find yourself awakening during the night and finding it difficult to go back into a restful
Chronic Pain, not getting sufficient sleep, etc. is a physical, emotional and psychological phenomenon that is often ignored in older adults causing depression and poor quality of life. Older adults report the use of complementary and alternative medicine in some form with 80% of these users reporting improvement in their health conditions.
